The Houston READ Commission was established in 1988 by Houston's Mayor Kathy Whitmire and the City Council in an effort to strategically address the literacy needs of the city's adult population. As a nonprofit urban literacy coalition, the Commission provides a variety of free literacy services for adults and families. The Commission promotes economic self-sufficiency and individual determination through programs that offer adult basic education (ABE), English as a Second Language (ESL), GED preparation (GED), family literacy, financial and computer literacy. |
