Ranking Evidence-Based Practice
Description Tomando Control de su Salud is a workshop conducted in Spanish to help Spanish speakers with chronic health problems effectively manage their conditions. The program meets once a week for six weeks in community settings, such as senior centers, churches, libraries, and hospitals. Two trained leaders, at least one of whom has a chronic disease themselves, guide participants through the two-and-a-half hour sessions each week. Each participant receives a copy of the companion book, an audio relaxation tape, and an audio exercise tape with booklet to supplement the material covered during the workshop sessions. This program is similar to the Stanford School of Medicine's Chronic Disease Management Program, but is developed separately and presents materials in a culturally appropriate manner.

The workshop covers techniques for managing problems associated with chronic diseases, such as pain, fatigue, and frustration. Participants are also taught how to eat healthfully, exercise appropriately, communicate effectively, and use medications properly, among other important skills. The classes are highly participative and allow participants to show mutual support and develop confidence in their abilities to manage their health.
Goal / Mission Tomando Control de su Salud is a group workshop that educates Latino individuals with chronic conditions on techniques to help them manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling lives.
Results / Accomplishments Tomando Control de su Salud was evaluated in a randomized controlled trial of Latinos with heart disease, lung disease, or type 2 diabetes. The program was found to be effective at improving the health of participants and reducing emergency room use. At both four months and one year, participants demonstrated statistically significant (p<0.05) improvements in health status, health behavior, and self-efficacy, along with significantly fewer emergency room visits.
