What is this Indicator?
This indicator shows the rate per 100,000 population of alcohol-related motor vehicle traffic crashes.
Why this is important:
Motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver kill 32 people in the United States every day. The annual cost of alcohol-related crashes totals more than $51 billion. There is strong evidence supporting the effectiveness of sobriety checkpoints as a public health intervention to reduce the harms associated with impaired driving. In 2008, 11,773 people were killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes, accounting for nearly one-third of all traffic-related deaths in the United States.
Technical Note:  The distribution is based on all 67 Florida counties. Rates calculated prior to 2011 do not reflect the population revisions made by the Florida Department of Health. The population data for 2001-2010, along with rates affected by the population data, were revised by the Florida Department of Health in August 2012.
