What is this Indicator?
This indicator shows the age-adjusted death rate per 100,000 population due to cerebrovascular disease and stroke. |
| Why this is important: Cerebrovascular diseases rank third among the leading causes of death in the U.S. Cerebrovascular disease can cause a stroke. A stroke occurs when blood vessels carrying oxygen to the brain become blocked or burst, thereby cutting off the brain's supply of oxygen. Lack of oxygen causes brain cells to die which can lead to death or disability. Each year, approximately 795,000 people in the U.S. will suffer a new or recurrent stroke. Although people of all ages may have strokes, the risk more than doubles with each decade of life after age 55. The most important modifiable risk factors for stroke are high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes mellitus. The Healthy People 2020 national health target is to reduce the stroke death rate to 33.8 deaths per 100,000 population. |
| Technical Note: The distribution is based on data from 67 Florida counties. |
