What is this Indicator?
This indicator shows the percentage of households receiving Supplemental Security Income. This percentage displays the number of households who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) as a fraction of 100 households.
Why this is important:
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a Federal income supplement program designed to help aged (65 years or over), blind, and disabled people who have little or no income. It provides cash to meet basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter. The program is administered by the Social Security Administration, but is funded by general tax revenues, not Social Security taxes. The program provides benefits to 7.9 million Americans.
