What is this Indicator?
This indicator shows the percentage of high school students that have ever been diagnosed with asthma. |
| Why this is important: In the United States alone, over 8.6 million children under the age of 18 have been diagnosed with asthma, and the number continues to rise. The increase in diagnoses may be due to an increase in the amount of time spent indoors and therefore greater exposure to dust mites and allergens; higher levels of air pollution; and limited access to quality healthcare. Asthma is the most common chronic disease in children and teens. Asthma results in missed days of school, limitations on daily activities, emergency department visits for treatment of asthma symptoms, and hospitalizations. In addition, asthma has been linked to childhood obesity and depressive symptoms. |
