What is this Indicator?
This indicator shows the percentage of adults aged 65 and older who received an influenza vaccination in the past year. |
| Why this is important: Influenza is a contagious disease caused by the influenza virus. It can lead to pneumonia and can be dangerous for people with heart or breathing conditions. Infection with influenza can cause high fever, diarrhea and seizures in children. It is estimated that 226,000 people are hospitalized each year due to influenza and 36,000 die - mostly the elderly. The seasonal influenza vaccine can prevent serious illness and death. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends annual vaccinations to prevent the spread of influenza. The Healthy People 2020 national health target is to increase the proportion of adults aged 65 years and older who receive an influenza vaccination to 90%. |
| Technical Note: The distribution is based on data from 67 Florida counties. |
