What is this Indicator?
This indicator shows the percentage of high school students who binge drink.
This value represents students who who had five or more drinks of alcohol in a row at least one time during the 30 days prior to the survey.
Why this is important:
According to research by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, adolescents who begin drinking at a young age are more likely to develop alcohol dependence than those who begin drinking at age 21. Patterns formed during adolescence play a critical role in health throughout adulthood. Alcohol use also impairs judgment and can lead to other high-risk behaviors such as drunk driving and sexual activity. Excessive alcohol use in the form of binge drinking can lead to increased risk of health problems such as liver disease or unintentional injuries.
Technical Note:  The distribution is based on data from 66 Florida counties.
