What is this Indicator?
This indicator shows the age-adjusted incidence rate for oral cavity and pharynx cancer in cases per 100,000 population.
Why this is important:
Oral cancer forms in tissues of the oral cavity (the mouth) or the oropharynx (the part of the throat at the back of the mouth). One in 99 Americans will be diagnosed with oral cancer or cancer of the pharynx in their lifetime. People who use tobacco, drink alcohol, or have a personal history of head and neck cancer are more likely than others to develop oral cancers. Research has shown that three out of every four cases of oropharyngeal cancer occur in those who use tobacco or alcohol or both.
Technical Note:  The distribution is based on data from 42 Florida counties.
Rates based on fewer than 10 cases were not included in the distribution.
