What is this Indicator?
This indicator shows the infectious syphilis (primary and secondary) incidence rate in cases per 100,000 population.
Why this is important:
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by a bacterium called Treponema pallidum. Syphilis can also be passed from mother to infant during pregnancy causing a disease called congenital syphilis.

In 2008, 13,500 cases of primary and secondary syphilis were reported in the United States, a 17.7 percent increase from 2007. The rate of primary & secondary syphilis in the United States was 18.4% higher in 2008 than in 2007. Primary and secondary syphilis rates have been increasing each year since 2000. In 2008, 63% of the reported primary and secondary syphilis cases in the U.S. were among men who have sex with men, but syphilis among heterosexuals is an emerging problem.
Technical Note:  The distribution is based on data from 67 Florida counties.
